Preface Preface
Advanced Engineering Dynamics was written for graduate students and scientists in Mechanical Engineering. It covers a wide range of fundamental and advanced topics which can be taught in a two-course sequence. The book deals with the treatment of many aspects of engineering dynamics usually not found in a single tome. Indeed, our goal was to write as complete a book as possible, in a compact, concise and rigorous style. The methods, tools and notations advocated in this book will appear to be novel to most readers. They mirror the style of the book in their efficiency, coherence and compactness. They are illustrated by many example problems which are essential to full comprehension of the subject. It should also be noted that this book is not specific to a particular field of application, such as robotics, spacecraft mechanics, or biomechanics. Many books are already available in these specialized fields.
In light of the ever increasing sophistication of Kinematics and Motion Simulation modeling and computing software, one may ask: why learn Dynamics? While they undoubtedly have their place in the engineering profession, these tools cannot be used properly without a thorough understanding of the subject matter. It can also be argued that too much reliance on a machine to do engineering analysis may limit the understanding of the user.
