Fluid Mechanics I (MEEG331): Lecture
2008 Fall

Cell and Tissue Transport
Time to Offer: Spring 2009

Students: undergraduate seniors and graduates
Prerequisites: undergraduate fluid mechanics or transport course
Credits: 3Hr/WK, 3CR

Description:
The course will start with an analysis of water, solute, gas, and heat exchange in the microcirculation and the relationship between structure and function. Transport in biological porous media will be examined and applied to arterial wall, bone, and cartilage. Active transport across membranes will be considered and applied to kidney and secretary organs. An introduction to transport across cell membrane and the role of receptors in transport, cell adhesion, and intracellular signaling will be presented. The course will conclude with student presentations on current research interests.
